Breeding potential of S4 maize lines in topcrosses for agronomic and forage traits Agronomy
Marcondes, Mariana Martins; Faria, Marcos Ventura; Mendes, Marcelo Cruz; Gabriel, Andre; Neiverth, Victor; Zocche, Jean Carlos.
This study aimed to evaluate the performance of 46 maize lines (S4) obtained from crosses between the commercial hybrids Penta x P30F53 in topcrosses with the commercial simple cross hybrid Dow8460 (tester) and checks (hybrids Penta, P30F53, Dow8460 and Status). The grain yield was evaluated in two environments in Guarapuava, Paraná State, and the effects of genotype, environment and genotype x environment interaction were significant. The grain yield of the topcross hybrids ranged from 8,416 to 13,428 kg ha-1. The agronomic characteristics of the forage and the bromatological characteristics of the silage were evaluated in environment 1. The green mass yield of the forage ranged from 48,767 to 87,714 kg ha-1 and the dry mass yield ranged from 14,749 to...

Evaluation of sodium sulfite and protein correction in analyses of fibrous compounds in tropical forages R. Bras. Zootec.
Gomes,Daiany Íris; Detmann,Edenio; Valadares Filho,Sebastião de Campos; Mezzomo,Rafael; Souza,Natália Krish de Paiva; Queiroz,Augusto César de; Detmann,Kelly da Silva Coutinho.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the contents of fibrous compounds in tropical grasses and legumes according to utilization of sodium sulfite in the neutral detergent solution or using a procedure for contaminant protein correction. Samples of ten grasses and ten legumes were used. The contents of neutral detergent fiber were decreased when sodium sulfite was used; however, more prominent reductions were verified in legumes. Sodium sulfite decreased the acid detergent fiber content in both forage groups. The contents of neutral and acid detergent insoluble protein and lignin were reduced by sodium sulfite in legumes, but no effect was observed in grasses with regard to these variables. The decrease in fiber contents in legumes could be explained...

Fermentation characteristics and nutritional value of elephant grass ensiled with old man saltbush R. Bras. Zootec.
Santos,Otanael Oliveira dos; Araújo,Gherman Garcia Leal de; Mistura,Claudio; Pereira,Luiz Gustavo Ribeiro; Voltolini,Tadeu Vinhas; Santos,Mércia Virginia Ferreira dos; Araújo,Josivânia Rodrigues de.
The effects of the addition of saltbush on the fermentation characteristics and nutritional value of silages of elephant grass (Pennistum purpureum Schum.) were studied through a completely randomized design with six old man saltbush (Atriplex nummularia Lind) levels (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 %) in substitution of the grass natural matter, with six replicates. Elephant grass presented 18.9% dry matter (DM) and silages were produced in experimental PVC silos, which were open at 70 days after ensilage. The increasing old man saltbush levels had increasing linear effect on the DM content of silages. There was quadratic effect for the contents of lactic and acetic acids and in vitro DM digestibility. Contents of butyric acid were negligible. Values pH of and...

PRODUCTIVITY AND NUTRITIVE VALUE OF TIFTON 85 IN SUMMER, WITH AND WITHOUT IRRIGATION UNDER DIFFERENT NITROGEN DOSES REA
Sanches,Arthur C.; Gomes,Eder P.; Rickli,Max E.; Friske,Elcio; Fasolin,Julia P..
ABSTRACT The pasture irrigation has expanded, mostly in small areas in order to boost the production system, along with the use of soil improvement techniques and high-productivity grasses. Thus, this study, carried out on a small dairy farm property, aimed to evaluate the productivity, botanical composition and nutritive value of Tifton 85 with different nitrogen (N) doses, in the presence and absence of irrigation. The experimental design was a randomized block in a split-plot design with four replications, plots Non-irrigated and Irrigated. The subplots consisted of nitrogen doses: 25 kg ha−1 cycle−1 of N, 50 kg ha−1 cycle−1 of N, 75 kg ha−1 cycle−1 of N and 100 kg ha−1 cycle−1 of N. The irrigation increased the productivity in an average of 3,626.5 kg...
